PRESS STATEMENT
4 JULY 2023
The National Association of Community Broadcasters (NACB) welcomes the enactment of Statutory Instrument 120 of 2023 – Broadcasting Services (Community and Campus Radio Broadcasting Services) (Amendment) Regulations, 2023 (No. 2) by the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe.
The Statutory Instrument allows licensed Community Radio Stations to offer advertisement services to commercial entities whose business operations are conducted within the licensee community.
This will go a long way in bolstering revenue generation and, ultimately viability and sustainability of Community Radios. As they are non-profit, community-owned entities, community radio stations face significant sustainability concerns inhibiting their ability to pursue their community broadcasting service effectively. Hence this Statutory Instrument is a positive development in that direction.
NACB commends the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) for its continued efforts to create a conducive environment for the general growth of the broadcasting sector and community radio stations in particular. Beyond creating a conducive environment as the industry regulator, BAZ’s technical and capacity-building support to community radios has been invaluable. It positions them as critical platforms for voices from the margins to be heard and access to information by local communities.
The National Association of Community Broadcasters is a collective of 14 licensed community radio stations in Zimbabwe. Its purpose is coordinating community broadcasters, unifying their voice and representing their collective interests. ENDS//
